Lying at the southeastern tip of China, Hong Kong adjoins the province of Guangdong (Canton) in Mainland China. The country is comprised of Kowloon and the New Territories in the mainland peninsula, an island named Hong Kong, and 235 outlying islands. Hong Kong, especially Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, is one of the most densely populated areas in the world with a population of more than 6 million people.
One of the country's most striking characteristics is the interweaving of seeming opposites. Much of Hong Kong's Western fabric comes from the legacy left by the British, who ruled the colony from 1842 until 1997, when it was returned to China as a Special Administrative Region. British influence is still evident everywhere, from schools to free-market economy, from rugby teams to double-decker buses, and from English pubs to orderly queues. But although the British molded the city, it has always been at its hear, Chinese. Hong Kong is a vibrant Chinese city with Chinese medicine shops, street vendors, lively dim sum restaurants, old men who take their caged birds for walks in the park, and colorful festivals.
