Program Highlight: Chile!

Chile, the world’s longest country, (as long as the distance from San Francisco to New York!) occupies a narrow strip of South American coast between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.  The country shares borders with Argentina to the east, Bolivia to the northeast, and Peru to the north.

Chile's people are warm and welcoming.  In the decades since the end of the Pinochet government, the country has devoted itself to reviving democratic traditions and building a lively, dynamic society.  A vibrant market economy has emerged and the country’s economic and social institutions have become integrated with those of the rest of Latin America and the world.  The country has one of the highest levels of literacy in Latin America.
Most Americans are not aware of the thriving film industry or the cutting-edge theater available there; Chile is on the cutting edge of the Latin American art scene.

The Chilean people speak Spanish, the second most commonly used language in international communication.  Skills in Spanish open endless doors for Americans living anywhere in North, South or Central America.  Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the US population; in 2006, it is expected that the Hispanic-American population will outnumber the African-American population.

A study abroad program in Chile would be an excellent way to learn or improve skills in Spanish.  Purdue offers three options: CIEE Santiago, IFSA-Chilean Universities Program in Santiago, and IFSA-Chilean Universities Program in Valparaiso.  The CIEE program is for one semester and both IFSA programs are for 1 or 2 semesters.

For more information on the IFSA-Chilean programs, please visit the program website.

If cost is a concern…. New scholarships are available to students participating in programs sponsored by IFSA-Butler.   They are available for summer programs ($500), semester programs ($1000) and full-year programs ($2000).  Visit or call the Purdue Study abroad office for details.
