Purdue's Peace Corps Connection
Author: Chris Klein
Posted: 18-Feb-06

Many people associate the Peace Corps with the idealism of the 1960s.  Though it was indeed established in that era, the organization is alive and well today.

Its mission has remained essentially the same since it was founded - Peace Corps still provides skilled volunteers to countries that request them, and it continues to help increase mutual understanding between the countries it serves and the US.  Since the 1960s, many Purdue graduates have served as Peace Corps Volunteers.

Purdue students who are getting ready to graduate and are looking for an interesting and rewarding way to spend two years should contact Purdue's Peace Corps representative, Clifton Johnson, at the organization's Chicago office.  Mr. Johnson, who was a Volunteer in the Kingdom of Tonga, can provide details on the application process.

There are about 40 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area.  Students who would like to hear about the experiences of Volunteers who did particular kinds of work, or who served in particular countries, can do so by contacting the Office of Programs for Study Abroad at cbklein@purdue.edu.
