Deadline: March 1, 2010 for programs during Summer 2010, Fall 2010, or Academic Year 2010-2011.
Objectives: to assist Purdue students with the added costs of studying overseas. In return, recipients will be expected to share their experiences with others to further global education and study abroad.
Grant: Recipients will be awarded up to $1,500 per session abroad. Funds for this grant program have been provided by the Office of the President of Purdue University.
Eligibility: Purdue students in good academic standing, who have applied for a Purdue-approved study abroad program, and who are interested in promoting international education are invited to apply. Eligibility is restricted to domestic students as defined by Purdue University. Domestic students include U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, permanent resident aliens, and aliens lawfully present in and able to establish domicile in the U.S. per federal immigration laws. International students who are holders of F, J and some other visa types are not eligible. There is no restriction on the length of overseas stay or number of credits earned.
Service project: All Travel Grant recipients are required to complete service projects to assist the Study Abroad Office promote international education. The project should be defined before the recipient departs for his or her overseas program.
Recipients and their Study Abroad advisor will decide which projects would be most appropriate for them and their host university. Some students have promoted Purdue while they are overseas, other students have written articles for local Indiana newspapers about their personal experiences. Students are welcome to make suggestions about what they would like to complete, but in some cases the SA advisor may already have a project in mind.
A Service Project Requirement Form will be signed by recipients and their SA advisor once the number and extent of the projects has been decided.
Application guidelines: An application consists of an essay in response to the points listed below. Each answer is limited to 250 words.
- Discuss a cultural, political, economic, or social aspect of your host country and relate it to your personal goals and objectives in choosing to study there.
- What financial constraints do you have? If necessary, describe changes in financial standing (i.e. recent loss of income), additional family expenses due to illness or death, or other unique circumstances (i.e. non-contributing parent, loss of aid/scholarship while studying abroad, etc.)
How to apply: After you apply for a Study Abroad program, log in to your My Study Abroad page. Further instructions will be included in a green box.
Selection: Scholarship applications from students planning to study abroad in Summer 2010, Fall 2010, or Academic Year 2010-2011 will be evaluated after March 1, 2010. Students currently studying abroad, or who have already returned from studying abroad, are not eligible to apply for this award.
Funds are limited, and awards are usually granted shortly after the Study Abroad application deadline of March 1, 2010.
