Overview

This program focuses on two main topics. The first part is on smart homes and will look at targets of building automation, such as comfort, efficiency and security/safety. Students will study how to improve living comfort by building automation, learn how building automation can influence efficiency among the supply/consumer chain, and simulate security and safety concepts.
The second part on German Energiewende will focus on energy supply, energy distribution, and energy consumption. Students will look into regenerative energy sources, conventional power generation, electrical supply networks, and more. The module on smart building infrastructure systems will also contain a one-week academic excursion to Cologne.
In addition, students will attend a German language class that is organized by the Language Center. Excursions to different cities in the state of Hessen and other leisure activities complement the program.

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
Language of Instruction: German & English
The program combines lectures and seminars offered by faculty members with hands-on experience and presentations by industry practitioners. Through a variety of learning activitites, participants will gain a theoretical background in an integrated approach to the construction of buildings and visit some of the most innovative buildings in Germany.
In addition to the construction course, participants will take a German language and culture class. Three different levels of German will be offered: beginning, intermediate and advanced. The duration of the language course will be 31 contact hours including a final exam. The classes are planned and provided by the h_da language center, which has long-standing experience in teaching foreign languages. You will be taught by highly qualified instructors of German as a foreign language who will pay special attention to your personal learning needs and interests. Class sizes of no more than 12 students guarantee intensive learning.
Excursions
A five-day excursion to Munich and other parts of southern Germany, weekend trips to Frankfurt/Main and the Upper Rhine Valley, and a bicycle tour to the
Messel Pit Fossil Site, a UNESCO World Heritage location, are included for all participants.
Housing
Participants share twin rooms in Hotel Atlanta, Darmstadt. The distance to the campus is 10 minutes by public transportation. Bedding and towels will be provided for each person. We suggest that you bring an additional-larger-towel for visits to the local swimming pool and lake. The rooms at Hotel Atlanta are equipped with a TV, radio, hairdryer, and a free Wi-Fi connection. Washing machines and public phones are available nearby.

A rich breakfast buffet will be provided at the hotel. Other meals are not included, but you will be given a Mensa card for inexpensive meals on the campus cafeteria (at reduced student prices).
The student restaurant (Mensa) on the campus serves a variety of snacks and dishes from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. In addition to the daily changing menus, vegetarian, non-pork, meat, and fish dishes are also served. Prices in the cafeterias and restaurants of the university are very reasonable.

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
This is an EXCHANGE program. Students will be paying their regular summer tuition to Purdue.
Other expenses -- housing, local transportation, lecture materials and insurance -- will be paid directly to Hochschule Darmstadt.
