Overview

CEA CAPA-Florence: Global Business Institute

Imagine being in the heart of one of the world’s powerhouses learning about the European Union and the culture of a global city’s work environment, both in the classroom and at your internship site. 

Florence is a vibrant city full of history but also with modern touches, you can see how globalization and immigration have played a role in Florence, try delicious Florentine food, and appreciate everything the city has to offer - all while exploring your interests in business.

The Global Business Institute is a certificate program, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Business Administration (an AACSB accredited institution), offering you business-focused courses and an internship placement where you can personalize your experience to best fit your interests.

Students can earn the Certificate in Global Business in one of the following ways: five business courses; four Business courses and the Global Internship Course; three Business courses, the Global Internship Course and one of the elective courses; or four Business courses and one elective course.

Eligibility

CEA CAPA-Florence: Global Business Institute

Due to the rigorous nature of the course work, some previous academic experience in business is recommended, but not required. 

GPA Requirement: 2.8 on a 4.0 scale

Academic Program

Students on this program will take mostly business classes, with the option to take a few electives depending on which way you choose to receive the certificate. Business classes, liberal arts classes and a psychology class are available.

Each Global Business Institute course is worth 3 credits. To receive a Certificate of Study in Global Business, you must complete a total of 15 credits.

Students with at least two previous semesters of Italian may also opt to do a 3-credit internship in place of one of their classes. 

Courses that are offered may include Italian Language, Art History, Studio Art, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Global Workforce Management, International Dimensions of Organizational Behavior, International Finance, International Economics, International Marketing, and more!

Excursions

While excursions are subject to change, the CAPA program typically includes several group activities and excursions, examples of what to expect are listed below:

Enjoy full-day excursions to Siena, famous for its art, history, and Palio horse race, and to the walled town of San Gimignano, with its 14 medieval towers. Social events include an arrival reception, a mid-term dinner, and a farewell ceremony.

CAPA-led events may include a walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo for stunning views over the city of Florence and a hike in the nearby hills, followed by dinner in one of the best pizzerias in town. Other activities, often self-guided, reflect what is on in the city at the time and may include a walking tour to the most important markets of Florence, tasting typical Italian snacks, a night at the opera, or attending soccer match at the Florence Stadium.


Housing

Housing is arranged by CAPA. You can opt to live in a shared apartment or a homestay (with your own room and two meals a day), all within commuting distance to the CAPA center. Homestays incur a supplementary fee.

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. 

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

The program fee includes tuition for 12-18 credits, housing in shared apartments, optional internship placement, on-site orientation, bus pass, emergency medical insurance, and cultural events & activities.

The homestay option has an additional fee (not listed below) of $2,500 and includes breakfast and dinner.
