Overview
CIEE - Bahia

This program is administered by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), a 200-university academic consortium. Purdue University has been a member of CIEE since 1972.

The CIEE-Bahia program targets students who wish to improve their Portuguese language skills and deepen their knowledge of contemporary Brazil, especially the Northeast region of the country. Academic work in Afro-Brazilian cultural studies is augmented by extensive exposure to various aspects of life in the Bahian region.

Salvador is located on the Atlantic coast of Brazil, ca. 800 miles northeast of Brasilia. A booming city of 2.1 million, it was the capital of Brazil and center of the sugar industry during the colonial period. The strong slave presence can now be detected in the African influences in religion, art, cuisine and ethnic dyamics of the region.

This CIEE study center is hosted by two institutions: Universidade Catolica do Salvador (UCSal) and Universidade Federal da Bahia. Both campuses are situated near the commercial center of the city and the colonial zone of Pelourinho. Program participants live with Bahian families within easy commuting distance of the campuses.
