The capital, Brisbane, is located in the south-east corner of the state and is a modern vibrant city with the perfect mix of city "hussle and bussle" and relaxed outdoor living. Brisbane regularly hosts national and international cultural and sporting events including the recent 2001 Goodwill Games. One hour south of Brisbane is the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast is famous for its miles of surfing beaches and hinterland rainforest and is considered "Australia's playground". Griffith University began in 1975. It took the name of a visionary Queenslander: Sir Samuel Griffith, a former Queensland Premier and the first Chief Justice of Australia. Samual Griffith's spirit of innovation and leadership continues today at the university that bears his name.
