| Overview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Location: Macao is just sixty kilometers from Hong Kong. A mere sliver of mainland and a couple of islands covering just under twenty-four square kilometers in total (and vigorously growing with creeping land reclamation), the territory is geographically and economically a midget compared to its booming cousin across the water. The transfer of Macao's administration (Portugal gave up any claims to sovereignty in the 1970s) to China in 1999 - two years after Hong Kong's - had none of the drama or controversy that surrounded that of Hong Kong. As in its larger neighbour, the majority of Macao's population of 436,000 are Cantonese-speaking Chinese. But this has not prevented the territory from developing an atmosphere distinct not only from Hong Kong but from other parts of southern China. New high-rise hotels, highways and bridges are appearing, and Hong Kong-style land reclamation has begun in earnest. Program: The Institute For Tourism Studies (IFT) is a public institution of higher education, offering tourism and hospitality management education, as well as related professional training. The mission of IFT is to be a worldwide recognized destination for tourism and hospitality studies with European flavour - a higher educational institute which not only benefits Macao, but the region, by developing students' professional and technical competence in preparation for leadership responsibilities in tourism and hospitality-related enterprises. IFT promises to continue to go in quest of learning and educational innovation and to foster professionals, making contributions to the tourism development of Macao and even of the Asia Pacific region.
