Overview
Mid-Sweden University
Sundsvall city view
Sweden stretches about 1,600km (990 miles) from north to south, but it's sparsely populated, with a disproportionate amount of territory lying above the Arctic Circle. Sweden is one of the countries located farthest from the equator. From north to south, Sweden lies at roughly the same latitude as Alaska. Forests cover more than half the land; Sweden is a heavily industrialized nation and less than 10% of its land is used for agriculture.

Sweden can be divided into three main regions: the mountainous northern zone of Norrland; Svealand, the lake-filled, hilly region of central Sweden; and Götaland, the broad plateau in southern Sweden, home of most of the country's agricultural enterprises. Sweden has more than 100,000 lakes, including Vänern, the largest in western Europe. About 9% of the countryside is covered by lakes, which play an important role in transporting goods from the Baltic ports to cities throughout Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia.

Sweden is a center for alpine activities including skiing, hiking, and glacier walking -- most of which take place in the mountainous regions of Norrland. This far-northern area is home to many of the country's highest peaks, including its highest mountain, Kebnekaise, at 2,080m (6,946 ft.).

Mid Sweden University is a multi-campus network university with centers in Harnosand, Sundsvall, Ornskoldsvik and Ostersund. Although the roots of the university go back to the 1840s, the university as it is today was actually established on July 1, 1993 when the four colleges listed above were merged. It is one of the first network university in Sweden, and is located in four different sites in the middle of the country. The University has more than 11,000 students enrolled and is best known for its academic studies and research programs in Humanities, Social Science, Science and Engineering, Teacher Training, Nursing and Social Care. Tourism Studies, under the Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the five areas that has been given priority by the university. Classes for international exchange students are taught in English.

The Student Union is responsible for the welfare of the students; health care, social activities etc. All student studying at Swedish universities are compulsory members of a student union. The fee is around 250 SEK per semester. As a member of the Student Union you will have an entry to all its activities and 10% discount in many of the shops and cafés downtown.

Then Student Union has its own building (Karhuset) with restaurant and pub, which serves excellent food and drinks at student prices. It also has its own book-shop with favourable prices. There are many interest groups within the the Student Union. The Sport Club (H2IF) organises sport activities every week like volley-ball and aerobics, and also excursions and trips.

All exchange students will have a student mentor, selected by the Student Union. The mentors will meet the exchange students upon arrival and escort them to their accomodation. They will also help with practical things.

Outside the leisure activities provided by the Student Union, each campus town has a sports center and swimming pool, a ski-slope and cross-country tracks within minutes of the center, and a number of sports clubs, teams and evening courses. The Mid Sweden University area also provides many opportunities to enjoy the natural environment with marked walking routes in summer. There is at least one cinema in each town showing 3-4 different films every week and each town has a theater and/or concert hall. For more program information, please visit the program website.

Academic Program

Students may participate in this program for an academic year or the spring semester. The academic year at Swedish universities usually consists of two semesters each extending over 20 weeks. The autumn (fall) semester runs from the beginning of September to mid-January and the spring semester from mid-January until the beginning of June. There is usually a two-week break in teaching at Christmas. June, July and August are summer holiday months in Sweden. Courses and programmes of study may start either in the autumn and/ or in the spring semester.

Each semester is divided into four periods of five weeks. Autumn semester includes period 1-4 and spring semester includes period 5-8. Students usually take one course of five credit points in each period (consecutive scheduling). Some courses continue over several periods, but may consist of a number of modules. In some cases courses of five credit points run simultaneously over two periods (parallel scheduling), but are studied on a part-time basis. At the end of the five or ten week period there is usually some form of examination, after which the student begins the next course.

Housing

Housing choices vary from campus to campus. Students will be housed in furnished single rooms or in small apartments with their own bedroom. Shared accommodations will be with other Swedish students. For more information, please see the Mid-Sweden University Handbook in the program binder at the Study Abroad Office.
