| Overview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Murdoch University is located 10 miles southwest of the city of Perth and 5 miles from the eclectic port city of Fremantle in the residential suburb of Murdoch. The natural bushland setting of Murdoch University makes it an ideal place to study and explore Western Australia. Peaceful courtyards separate the buildings and are beautifully landscaped with native Australian shrubs and trees. Generally, Study Australia participants prefer our furnished, self-catering off-campus housing. Most of the units are located near the coastal suburb of Fremantle, with a short bus ride to campus. Fremantle offers excellent nightlife and cultural opportunities, as well as easy access to Perth and a short stroll to the Indian Ocean. Other options, including on-campus housing, are available upon request. The Study Australia program at Murdoch includes an optional 10-day camping expedition in remote Western Australia at a partially subsidized cost (see below). This fun-filled bus trip, to the rugged northwest of Western Australia, covers close to 2,500 miles across plains of wild flowers and the vast outcrop that is outback Australia. On this trip, students will meet the dolphins at Monkey Mia in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, visit Ningaloo reef, home to some 500 species of fish, and hike the spectacular gorges of Karijini National Park. Murdoch University subsidizes a portion of the cost and participants will pay the balance (approximately $400 - $500). The Study Australia resident director and Murdoch study-abroad office arrange social and cultural activities during the semester, especially for study-abroad students.
