Overview

The second-largest city in Chile, Valparaíso enjoys a spectacular location between the mountains and the sea. This coastal city boasts a romantic, time-worn elegance of cobbled streets and Victorian houses.

This intermediate-level program is perfect for students with three or four semesters of college-level Spanish who want to acquire greater fluency. The program is designed to offer you the opportunity to develop your Spanish language skills, to learn about Chile in its social, economic, political, and cultural contexts, and become involved in a series of activities that will enable you to feel part of Chilean life. You may choose from up to eleven courses, all taught in Spanish, ranging from Chilean culture and history to Latin American politics to environmental issues.

The semesters are approximately March thru July (Spring/Semester One) or August thru December (Fall/Semeser Two).

If students complete courses while abroad from Purdue colleges that have not approved the program, they might be able to earn transfer credit for those courses. Students interested in pursuing transfer credit should discuss this with both their academic advisor and their study abroad advisor before applying to the program.

Eligibility

IFSA-Valparaíso Intermediate Spanish Program

The program is open to Purdue students who have completed at least four semesters of university study by the start of the program, although there is the possibility of an exception for students who have completed three semesters of university study by the start of the  program.

Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity and a desire to experience another culture.

GPA Requirement: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Language Requirement: 3-4 Sem

Excursions

This program typically includes the following: 

Arrival and orientation

  • Airport pick-up for group flight travelers
  • 10-day on-site orientation: Includes transportation, accommodation, activities and meals
  • Intensive Spanish training
  • Welcome brunch
  • Guided tour of the twin cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar
  • Transportation to host family

Day trips

  • Trip to Pablo Neruda’s house in Isla Negra and the village of Pomaire, known for its clay handicrafts
  • Tour of Quintay (a small bay) and lunch with local fishermen


Excursions

  • 4-day trip to La Serena

Workshops/Activities

  • Community Service workshop
  • Traditional South American Dance workshop: Students learn Chile’s national dance, the cueca, as well as salsa, tango, etc.
  • Chilean Culinary Arts workshop: Taught by a local chef
  • Student conversation exchange partner program
  • Photography contest
  • University cultural and sports activities

Housing

Housing is with a carefully selected host families in beautiful Viña del Mar, just ten minutes from Valparaíso. The program fee includes three meals per day.

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to an outside agency and what costs need to be paid after arrival at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

The program fee includes tuition, accommodation with a host family, three meals per day, program excursions and activities (see list under excursions), and on-site orientation.

NOTE:  Recipients of certain tuition remission and scholarship programs (those funded by the State of Indiana such as Indiana Top Scholars) should pay careful attention to the regulations for using those benefits for study abroad.  Ask your financial aid advisor about any limitations.

Application Deadlines

For full consideration, students must submit all supporting documents by the dates below.  Popular programs fill quickly, often before the deadline.  To insure a place in a program, apply as early.

As soon as a student submits an on-line application, a My Study Abroad account is created.  Consult the My Study Abroad page for the specific list of requirements for the chosen program since those can differ slightly from program to program.  Applicants may also check on the status of their applications.

After a student is approved for a program, s/he will receive additional information regarding any necessary supplemental paperwork, including any program-specific applications, and confirmation deposits.
