Overview

This six-week course is co-ordinated the School of Banking and Finance within the UNSW Australian School of Business. The ninety-hour program is comprised of lectures, country case studies, workshops and excursions to a variety of South East Asian Embassies in Canberra, the capital of Australia. The aim of the program is to provide a detailed understanding of how international business is executed in South East Asian economies.

South East Asian business is a product of history and culture. It is also emerging from the economic downturn of the late 1990’s and is currently going through an expansionary phase. The program will inform students of the recent histories, political structures, economic systems, industries and financial structures of South East Asian economies. In addition to this, the course examines the significant family structures of the larger businesses in South East Asia, including an examination of the cultural practices and entry barriers to the market itself. The program will focus on: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, China (including Hong Kong) and Thailand. References will be made to the closed economies of the Indo-Chinese countries of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Students undertaking the program will gain an appreciation on how to market to South East Asian companies, including the development of proposals and understanding the cultural sensitivities associated to conducting business with companies in this area. The South East Asian region represents new markets and frontiers for all companies wanting to expand their market reach and potential.

Locations

The first two weeks of the program are set in Darwin, in Australia’s ‘Top End’. The highlight during this period is a three-day camping expedition into Kakadu National Park viewing ancient Aboriginal rock art, crocodiles and spectacular scenery.

At the end of week two, the program will move to Canberra, Australia’s capital and seat of government, where students will tour such national institutions as the Australian War Memorial and the National Museum of Australia.

From there, until the end of week five, the program will be based at the UNSW campus, located 20 minutes from downtown Sydney, Australia’s largest and most active city, and five minutes from the beachside suburb of Coogee.

In week six, the program shifts to Cairns where students will finish classes and then be able to relax and participate in the wide range of cultural and social activities available.
