This program is a direct exchange between Purdue University and Ruhr University Bochum. Ruhr University Bochum was established in 1965 and has grown to become one of the largest universities in Germany with a student population of around 35,000. The university is well known for the numerous contacts its schools of Science and Engineering entertain with industry through important research in many different fields. Bochum has a population of some 500,000 and is situated in the Ruhr River valley, the economic nerve center of Germany. Link here for general information about studying in Germany. The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Ruhr University Bochum emphasizes interdisciplinarity through the integration of the engineering sciences with other interdisciplinary institutes. The Department of Electrical Engineering offers a wide variety of courses. Interested ECE students should first consult with the director of undergraduate studies for the school. Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program. Along with the costs outlined below, students participating on exchange programs in Germany should expect to pay a semester contribution toward subsidized services at their host university. These fees range from approximately €75 to €350 per semester and typically include a pass for regional public transportation. See your study abroad advisor for more details.
