Program Description

This course is designed to provide students with a first-hand look at the role of microbes in the production of various commercial products including enzymes, pharmaceuticals, foods, and commodity chemicals. Germany is a choice location based on its history in food fermentations and expertise in anaerobic digestion of agricultural residues. This course has been offered in several prervious years and student feedback was highly positive. 

Itinerary under development: (subject to change due to availability) 

May 10-Depart for Munich, Germany 

May 11-Arrive in Munich and check into Hotel Isartor, Orientation session, welcome dinner 

May 12-Bus to the Technical University of Munich School of Life Sciences in Freising for a presentation, visit to Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan.  

May 13-Guided walking tour of Munich, guided tour of the sewage treatment plant Gut GroBlappen. 

May 14-Visit to Bietigheim-Bissingen, Visit to Felsengartenkellerei in Hessignheim for wine tasting and learning about th wine making process, transfer to Stuttgart hotel B&B Hotel Stuttgart City 

May 15-Visit to State Institute for Agricultural Production and Bioenergy include tour of labs. then visit to a biogas plant, Unterer Lindenhof.  

May 16-Guided walking to of Stuttgart, then free time

May 17-Guided tour of Ludwigsburg Residential Palace, then free afternoon in Ludwigsburg

May 18-Visit to Schneiders Profichemie, a family-run business in the field of Chemical related products and production plant, transfer to Heidelberg Hotel Bayrischer Hof, then guided tour of Heidelberg. 

May 19- Visit to Heidelberg Pharma in Ladenburg, free afternoon in Heidelberg

May 20-Visit to LenioBio GmbH, a life science biotech, then transfer to Aachen hotel B&B Hotel Aachen-City, orientation session, Guided walking tour of Aachen's old town.  

May 21-Visit to Bayer AG, a Life Science company, train to Berlin (4 hours), receive your local transportation pass 

May 22-Guided walking tour of Berlin, Visit to Roots Radicals-a zero waste food company

May 23-Free day in Berlin, Farewell dinner 

May 24-Free to depart any time 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Academic Credit

Earn 3 credits for ABE 35100.  All students must check with their academic advisor to see how this course can be used in their plan of study.  Contact Prof. Engelberth directly if you are unsure if you qualify for this program.  

Pre-requisites:  ABE 202, BCHM 307, or CHE 211

 

 

 

Eligibility

This program is open to Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, and Food Science - or other applicable majors.  Students must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing with the university.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated cost is $4,800   This includes:  All housing, academic credits, ground transportation in Germany, Breakfast daily, Welcome and Farewell Meals, all activities listed on the itinerary, and international health insurance. 

Additional Costs:  Round trip airfare, passport, visa (if necessary), meals, personal excursions and personal spending money.

Students will be accepted on a rolling basis until the program is full.  20 spots available.
