Program Description
ME 354: Machine Design is a core, required junior-level course in the Mechanical Engineering curriculum that equips students with foundational skills in the analysis and design of mechanical components, including shafts, gears, fasteners, and bearings. The course is typically taken by students in their second semester of Junior year. Students who are unable to take it in that semester (due to internships, co-ops, etc.) can take advantage of the Maymester and complete the course before they begin their summer internships.
Classes will be held at Schiller University (classroom space only) and housing will be at the StayCity Aparthotel in Heidelberg. Several excursions are planned including Audi, Mercedes, Vibracoustic, along with cultural excursions in Heidelberg, Frankfort, Stuttgart, and Strasbourg France for a class session at the CEPA Chateau and a visit to the European Parliament building with time to explore the old city. The itinerary is still under development. Day trips and excursions will be scheduled closer to departure. Hotel rooms has small kitchens for simple meals and laundry facilities on site at the hotel.
**Please note that ME 323 and ME 274 must be completed satisfactorily prior to departure.

Academic Credit
Earn 3 credits for ME 35400 Machine Design I. This course must be required as part of your plan of study to be eligible. Students must discuss this course with their academic advisor prior to committing to to the program and submitting a deposit.
Students must satisfactorily complete ME 323 and ME 274 Prior to departure.

Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
Estimated cost is $5,200 which includes: Housing, welcome and farewell meals, all academic excursions and transportation on the itinerary, cultural excursions, local transportation pass, breakfast daily, academic credits, and international health insurance.
Additional costs: Airfare, meals not provided (small kitchens are in hotel rooms), travel documents like passport and visa (if needed), personal activities, and personal spending money. Laundry facilities on site at the hotel.
Application Deadline
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the program reaches capacity. 20-24 spots available.
