Program Description

Join Lecturer Tridib Saha in beautiful Heidelberg Germany for this course on Hybrid and Hybrid Electric vehicles!  This course will introduce HEV/EV fundamentals using a systems/overview lens.  Students will also visit Berlin, Strasbourg France, and Munich! 

  • Course includes:  (Industry visits subject to change due to availability) 

–Seminar – approx. 10 hours of going over EV/HEV related topics on an overview level. 

–Learning is anchored by four industry tours (Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Daimler Truck)

two 1-hour guest talks (company rep and EPA/EU standards), ~2 hours

–A final team presentation on the learnings from this tour ~ 2-4 hours

Weekly Quizzes (three of them)

No Midterms or Finals

Classes will be held at Schiller University in Heidelberg (classroom space only) 

Preliminary Itinerary (subject to change due to availability)  There will be an overnight in Munich and the final weekend in Berlin as well as a day trip to Strasbourg, France.  

May 10- Depart the USA 

May 11- Arrive in either Frankfurt or Stuttgart and take the train to Heidelberg (you will be given instructions) Students will stay in the StayCity in Heidelberg in shared rooms that have a small kitchen.  Breakfast provided daily. 

May 12- Class 10am-12pm at Schiller University (classroom space only), Walking tour of Heidelberg, Welcome dinner 

May 13- Class 10am-12pm,  Audi Visit

May 14-National Holiday-Ascension Day- Cultural events planned 

May 15-Class 10-12- Free afternoon 

May 16-17- Free days (possible optional trip to Munich for soccer match.  This is not included in program fees but will be optional) 

May 18- Class 10-12, Lunch on own, 2-4 afternoon class session, free evening.  

May 19-Daimler Truck visit, visit to Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Batteries 

May 20-Class 10-12, free afternoon 

May 21-Mercedes Factory tour, Porsche Museum, Free time in Stuttgart before return to Heidelberg

May 22-In Strasbourg France for the day, class 10-12, European Parliament tour, Free time to explore Strasbourg, Return to Heidelberg or you are free to travel for the weekend (take the train to Paris, for example) 

May 23-24- Free days 

May 25- Whit Monday- National holiday- Class session 10-12- lunch on own, 2-4 afternoon session to work on group presentations 

May 26- Leave Heidelberg for Munich by train.  Cultural activities and tours in Munich TBD 

May 27-Class time, solar powered buses in Munich, free evening to explore Munich 

May 28-Train to Berlin (5.5 hours), cultural tours in Berlin upon arrival, free time in Berlin 

May 29- Company tour, Renewable energy visit, Free afternoon, Farewell dinner in Berlin 

May 30-9-12 Wrap up session and presentations, cultural visits, free evening 

May 31- Students free to leave any time 


Academic Credit

Students will earn 2 credits for ECE 29595.  This program is open to ECE students who have reached at least the sophomore level.  Prerequisites Calculus 1 and 2, Physics 172 and 272.  

 

Eligibility

This program is open to ECE students and other majors that are interested in HEV/HV and transoportation (ECE given preference but all are encouraged to apply)  Students must have reached at least the sophomore level.  Please contact Tridib Saha directly if you are unsure if you qualify for this program.  

Prerequisites:  Calculus 1 & ll Phys 172 & 272.  

Students on academic notice are not eligible. 

 

 

 

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Program cost is estimated to be between $4,700 and $4,900 which includes:  All housing, all industry visits on the itinerary, all cultural events on the itinerary, welcome and farwell dinners, breakfast daily, local transportation pass, 2 academic credits, and international health insurance. 

Additional expenses:  Airfare, passport and visa (if required), meals, personal activities and personal spending money. 

Application Deadline

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the program is filled.  24 spots available.
