Program Description

There is an urgent need to develop the next generation of leaders to confront the health and safety risks posed by natural and man-made disasters.  The growing frequency and magnitude of these disasters is altering landscapes, causing harm to human and animal health, prompting population relocation, and economic loss.  Students will be introduced to systems, infrastructure, and professionals working to support critical infrastructure like drinking water systems and public health in the UK. 

Join Prof. Andrew Whelton in beautiful London for spring break and to learn more about this important topic!

March 14- Arrive in London (students purchase their own flights) Make your way to the hotel for check-in.

March 15-Morning London sightseeing and landmarks tour, lunch break, Evening Welcome dinner

March 16-Kickoff class 9am-12pm, lunch break, SoHo Fire Station, Free evening

March 17-Class 9am-12pm, lunch break, Afternoon visit to Anglian Water HQ, Free evening

March 18-Morning tour The British Museum, lunch break, Afternoon John Snow Broad Street Pump, Free evening

March 19-Free Morning, lunch break, Afternoon visit to Media Orgranization, Free evening

March 20-Morning tour and lecture at Imperial College London, lunch break, Afternoon class session, Evening Farewell dinner

March 21-Morning visit to Houses of Parliament, lunch break, Free afternoon and evening

March 22-Everyone free to leave any time.


Academic Credit

Earn 3 credits for either CE 49700 or EEE 49500.  Some classwork will be required before/after travel.  All students must check with their academic advisor to see how this class can be used in their plan of study.

This program is open to all engineering students.  All students must check with their academic advisor to see how this program can be used in their plan of study.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated cost is $4,100 which includes:  All hotels, in-country transportation, breakfast daily, Welcome and Farewell meals, all excursions and activities on the itinerary, 3 academic credits, and international health insurance.

Additional costs:  Airfare, meals, Passport and travel documents, personal spending money and activities.

Students will be accepted on a rolling basis until the program reaches capacity.  20 spots available.
