Program Description
Information, Culture, and Society in London explores how information and information systems shape our beliefs, influence decision-making, and define our collective knowledge. London is an ancient city, founded by the Romans in 43 CE and there is evidence of human construction at Stonehenge beginning about 3100 BCE. The way humans have created, saved, and used information from prehistoric times to modern day are uniquely available to see in tangible ways in London and the surrounding areas. We will explore the impacts of the British Empire and colonialism on native systems of information and knowing, and how this has implications in moderns days in areas such as cartography. We will visit the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world, as well as Imperial College London, an urban campus founded in 1907 with roots in the Victorian era. These institutions were created with very different information collecting and disseminating systems and goals, and who information was for varied greatly.
This course will include visits to sites around London including:
* Black Cultural Archives
* Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms
