Program Description
Ireland is a global MedTech hub, home to 18 of the world's top 25 medical device manufacturers and the second-largest country for exporting medical devices in Europe. Further, Ireland is also a key international partner for Purdue and many of the prominent MedTech companies in Ireland are based in Indiana and strong partners of the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. This spring break course will provide international exposure to medical device design, manufacturing processes, business practices, and the culture of Ireland.
*Please note that you must be able to leave campus on the group shuttle to IND at 4:00PM on Friday, March 12 or you will need to obtain your own transportation for the group flight. You are never asked to skip any academic commitment so if you have any issues with the group fight leaving 8:00pm on March 12, please let us know before you commit to this program.
Planned itinerary: (subject to change due to availability)
March 12 - 4:00PM shuttle to Indianapolis Airport for 8:00pm flight to Dublin (group flight included)
March 13 - Arrive Dublin Airport - 9:00AM, travel to Northern Ireland Giant's Causeway, distillery tour, Overnight in Derry, Ireland
March 14- Visit to Glenveagh National Park, Slieve League Cliffs, Overnight in Sligo
March 15- Visit to Fort Wayne Metals, depart for Galway, University of Galway visit, free evening, overnight in Galway
March 16-Company visit near Galway (TBD), free evening
March 17- St Patrick's Day in Galway or optional trip to Dublin for the day, free day due to national holiday
March 18- Head to Limerick, visit Cook Medical, cultural activity TBD, Bunratty Castle dinner and show, overnight in Limerick
March 19- Company visit (e.g., Abbott), Rock of Cashel visit, depart for Dublin, Enjoy the Celtic Nights Irish meal and traditional Irish dance show, free evening in Dublin
March 20- (Saturday) Free day for exploration in Dublin
March 21-Depart from Dublin Airport for 3:00PM arrival at Chicago O'Hare Airport, Shuttle return to PMU
Academic Credit
Earn 3 credits for BME 49500 (or 59500 with instructor approval) All students must check with their academic advisors to see how this can be used in their plans of study.
Eligibility
All engineering majors and other majors with a relevant connection to the design, development, and use of medical devices are eligible.
Open to all undergraduates at all levels in relevant majors. Graduate students will also be considered and could earn BME 59500 credit (instructor approval required)
Depending on the number of aplications received, preference may be given to Biomedical Engineering and upper level students.
Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
Estimated cost is $5,600-$5,800: This includes round trip group flight, airport shuttles, hotels, Breakfast daily, a few lunches, Welcome and Farewell dinners, all ground transportation in country, all activities and excursions on the itinerary with entrance fees, Academic credit, and international health insurance.
Additional Costs: passport, some meals, personal excursions, and personal spending money. (optional day trip to Dublin on St. Patrick's Day if you choose this option)
Application Deadline
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the program is full. Up to 20 spots are available.
