Program Description
There is an urgent need to develop the next generation of leaders to confront the health and safety risks posed by natural and man-made disasters. The growing frequency and magnitude of these disasters is altering landscapes, causing harm to human and animal health, prompting population relocation, and economic loss. This course is a step towards developing these "globally informed" professionals. Students will be introduced to systems, infrastructure, and professionals working to support critical infrastructure like drinking water systems and public health in the Spain. Barcelona, Spain, was selected as the destination based on the short course duration and also contacts by the instructor already exist on this topic.
Planned itinerary: (subject to change due to availability)
Departure (US to BCN-Barcelona): Friday, March 12, 2027 (only if all academic obligations are complete) or Saturday, March 13, 2027
Saturday, March 13, 2027 - Arrive at Barcelona Airport.
Sunday, March 14, 2027 – Barcelona Orientation & Welcome and evening Welcome Dinner at a traditional Spanish restaurant.
Monday, March 15, 2027 – Prades & Exploration
Tuesday, March 16, 2027 – Industry Visit: Pau Costa Foundation - explore nearby strategic sites nearby where innovative forest management strategies are implemented for fire prevention through extensive grazing, prescribed burning, and mechanical clearings.
Wednesday, March 17, 2027 – Wildlands & University Visit - visit various sites of Barcelona’s wildland urban interface, such as Rectoret, Tibidabo, Vallvidrera, etc.. Visit to the fire station of Vall d’Hebron or Pont de Vilomara. Seminars at University of Polytechnic Catalunya with professors.
Thursday, March 18, 2027 – Cultural Exploration - visit to the Cathedral of Barcelona and The Picasso Museum Barcelona.
Friday, March 19, 2027 –Municipality Management - Meeting with the local municipality about infrastructure, public health, and disasters and evening Farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
Saturday, March 20, 2027 –Free Day
Return (BCN-Barcelona to US): Sunday, March 21, 2027 – Departure to USA
Academic Credit
Earn 3 credits for CCE 497 or EEE 495 or EEE 595, for Grad Student Credit.
All students must check with their academic advisors to see how this can be used in their plans of study.
Eligibility
Open to all students in Engineering and related majors. Preference will be given to CCE and SEE students.
Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
Estimated cost is $4,100 - $4,300: This includes hotels, breakfast daily, Welcome and Farewell dinners, all ground transportation in country, all activities and excursions on the itinerary with entrance fees, Academic credit, and international health insurance.
Additional Costs: Flights, passport, some meals, personal excursions, and personal spending money.
