Program Description

“Italian Discoveries” combines two, 3-credit HONR courses, “Da Vinci’s Renaissance” and “Our Postmodern Present” into a seamless whole. The 3-week program also brings together the best of Italy, from coastal sea villages to the sun-drenched hills of Tuscany—from famous cities to small towns known only to locals. Any Purdue student with a GPA over 3.0 may apply.
The class is completely interdisciplinary (as was da Vinci's career) so the program will be of interest to STEM students as much as to students in the humanities.
We begin in Paderno del Grappa where we will explore the Italian approach to food and life while completing most of our class instruction. We then move to Venice, where we will live and study on the small, exclusive island of San Servolo, the home of Venice International University. With the watery city as our text book, we will discover why this unforgettable city is unique in all the world. We then spend time exploring the postmodern city of Milan and, if you so choose, the fishing villages of Le Cinque Terre. In our final week, we move to Florence, the epicenter of Renaissance art and science.
