Program Description

THIS PAGE IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION. PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON.

COM 114 in Copenhagen is specifically designed for and exclusively open to incoming first-year students to West Lafayette or Indianapolis, starting in the fall, 2026.

Many first-year students enroll in Fundamentals of Speech in their first or second semesters. However, there are many benefits to taking the course abroad this summer. It will introduce you to fellow first-year students prior to moving to campus. COM 114 in Copenhagen will allow you to focus on a single subject, instead of adding it to an already demanding semester course-load. The program will provide a jump-start on how to navigate Brightspace (Purdue's learning-management system). And finally, we will illuminate the topic by placing it in the context of a vibrant world-capital. Tentative examples of how we will do this include an Improv workshop (impromptu speech), Sensory Learning on Nordic wellness practices (informative speech), Becoming the Travel Guide (explanation speech), visiting the Human Library, a Cultural Scavenger Hunt, and much more.

Public speaking can be uncomfortable. So can adapting to a new place. We approach this program as an opportunity to develop comfort through guided experience. Participate to learn how to become confident navigating changing situations. Whether it is presenting a class project, explaining a concept at work, persuading your boss you deserve a raise, giving a wedding toast, or settling into a new home COM 114 in Copenhagen will prepare you to approach the situation with confidence.

In addition to the program leader/instructor, students will be fully supported by our program partner in Copenhagen, DIS. To apply, read the details outlined below, carfully following all instructions.

Academic Credit

This program is open to ALL MAJORS.  Students who complete the program will earn a letter grade (A,B,C,D,F) and three COM 114 credits from the College of Liberal Arts.

Fundamentals of Speech (COM 114) fulfills Purdue's oral communication requirement. Applicants are urged to consult their plan of study to confirm if this course is required for them, as it is for most Purdue degrees.

Coursework is done entirely in English.  Earning three credits in only four weeks cannot be done without significant effort and preparation.  Students will complete required/graded coursework pre-departure, starting in early-June. While abroad, daily class sessions will take place between site visits, guest lecutres, and weekend excursions.

This program might not be for you if your schedule will be full during this period of the summer. Much of your grade will be determined prior to flying to Denmark.

THIS PROGRAM IS RIGHT FOR STUDENTS WHO:

-Want to develop their world-readiness & communication skills.

-Have exhibited a high degreee of maturity and who are up for a challenge (a letter of recommendation is required).

-Intend to be active, engaged leaders at Purdue

-Have a flexible schedule in early-June, to complete the pre-departure coursework

-Fully understand what they are applying for after having requested and read the course syllabus & draft calendar

If this does not describe you, many other study abroad options will be available during your Purdue career.
