Program Description
Join Prof. Romit Maulik in beautiful Florence, Italy!
Modern mechanical engineers increasingly work with large datasets generated by experiments, simulations, sensors, imaging systems, and computational models. In areas such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, structural vibrations, acoustics, manufacturing, robotics, and design optimization, engineers must be able to interpret complex data, identify meaningful patterns, build predictive models, and make informed engineering decisions. This course introduces students to modern data-driven methods for mechanical engineering, with an emphasis on practical implementation, physical interpretation, and engineering applications.
Throughout the course, students will implement methods in Python using standard scientific computing and machine learning tools. Assignments will combine conceptual understanding, computational exercises, and interpretation of engineering datasets. The course will use a hybrid lecture-and-laboratory format, allowing students to connect mathematical ideas directly to hands-on applications in mechanical engineering.
Proposed Itinerary: Subject to change due to availability -Cultural events scheduled during non class time to include: Leonardo Interactive Museum, Museo Gallileo, Brunelleschi Pass to Piazza del Duomo including guided tour, Boboli Gardens, Italian cooking class, and day excursion to the Italian Motor Valley

Academic Credit
Students will earn 3 credits for ME 497. All students must check with their academic advisor as to how this course can be used in their plan of study.
Eligibility
Open to Engineering students in good standing: Students are expected to have prior exposure to Python programming, linear algebra, and basic probability and statistics. Suggested prerequisites include ME 239 and MA 265. No prior machine learning or deep learning experience is required. Students on Academic Notice will not be considered.

Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
Estimated cost is $5,500-$5,750- Cost includes: Housing (shared apartments with fully equipped kitchens), airport pick up, all cultural excursions listed on the itinerary, Welcome and Farewell meals, 3 academic credits, and international health insurance.
Additional costs: RT airfare from US to Florence, travel documents, meals, personal activities and personal spending money
*Students will be housed in shared apartments with other Purdue students. Typically, 4-6 students per apartment (2 per bedroom)
