Students will learn about how public policy impacts disabled daily life and technology access, through comparing and contrasting the public policies of Japan and the United States. Students will find that both systems have advantages and disadvantages, and that no system fully supports disabled people and their technology rights.
Students will learn about the history of industrialization in Japan, the cultural attitudes toward technology as informed by Buddhism, Shinto beliefs, and historic social rituals and hierarchies. They will also learn about current policies in technology advancement. These lessons will be supported by tours of historic sites, museums visits, and other cultural experiences.
Students will be expected to conduct qualitative research collaboratively and work together to ensure that data collection protocols are culturally relevant and thus supportive of valid data and interpretation.
