Program Description
This study abroad program offers students an immersive exploration of Oaxaca, Mexico, through its rich cultural traditions, Indigenous knowledge, history, art, and foodways. With Oaxaca as their classroom, students will participate in hands-on workshops, visit archaeological and cultural sites, explore local markets, and engage directly with artisans, chefs, designers, and community members.
Through these experiences, students will explore the intersections of culture, identity, gender, community, and place while examining how traditions are preserved, adapted, and shared across generations. Particular attention will be given to the role of women, Indigenous communities, and local knowledge holders in shaping cultural practices and responding to tourism, migration, and globalization.
The program encourages students to think critically about cultural representation, identity, and the interconnected histories of Mexico, the United States, and the broader Americas. Through experiential learning and meaningful community engagement, students will gain a deeper appreciation for Oaxaca's cultural diversity and the people who sustain its traditions.
