Overview
Amsterdam is a progressive city defined by its cutting edge contributions to the arts, business, politics, and social policy. Students who are eager to take an independent, fresh look at the world and at themselves will thrive on this program. As the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam has a central place in European economic, political, and cultural history. Yet, the city is far from frozen in time—some of the most forward-looking socio-political policy in the world originates here.
The IES Amsterdam summer program, Society, Culture, and Gender in Amsterdam, allows students to study art history, literature, and sociology through the lens of Gender Studies. The program also includes a long weekend in Berlin to compare and contrast the topics of study.
This program typically starts in mid-June and ends in late July or early August.

Eligibility
The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
Students take two classes for a total of six credits. IES typically offers four classes to choose from, all with a theme of gender studies.

Excursions
Coursework includes visits to local sites and museums as well as a long weekend in Berlin. A day trip to another city in the Netherlands is also included. The on-site arrival orientation will also provide opportunities to tour and explore Amsterdam.

Housing
Students will live in apartments with internet access, within walking distance to public transport. All students will have access to a kitchen and laundry facilities (pay laundry). No meals are provided.

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
