______________________________

Join us this summer in Brazil for a once in a lifetime experience where you will learn from local communities what obstacles and opportunities lie ahead for sustainable futures.

Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Brazil have long stewarded Amazonian landscapes to support their livelihoods and cultivated a vast array of global partnerships to do so. In this 6-credit, 3 week course you will partner with Mebêngôkre-Kayapó and Local Communities to collaborative on projects focused on archaeology, media, and sustainability in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon and on the Brazilian coast. In a unique partnership between universities from the United States (Purdue and Middle Tennessee State University) and Brazil (Federal University of Pará and the Museu Goeldi) and Kayapó non-governmental organization, you experience collaborating with communities to address sustainability challenges. By learning from and working alongside Kayapó instructors and Local leaders, you learn firsthand about the threats to their livelihoods and to the spaces they call home as they battle to maintain their livelihoods and innovate new pathways for sustainability.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Learning about the socio-ecological landscape of the Brazil, especially as it relates to sustainability
  • Experience first-hand how to forge collaborative and community-based projects in global settings
  • Training in collaborative and participatory community work, including ethnography and archaeology
  • Developing an awareness of different livelihoods
  • Accessing to leading institutions in Brazil, local experts, and academic networks
  • Learn about the Amazon from Indigenous and Local Professors, including overnight forest hikes.
  • Visiting nationally renowned museums, botanical gardens, and exhibits.
