UMN-Montpellier: Language and Culture in Southern France

Paul Valery University

Participants take courses at the Institute for Foreign Students of Paul Valéry University.  There are five teaching levels and students are placed according to their level of French language proficiency.

Within easy reach of both mountains and the Mediterranean, and home to 100,000 university students, Montpellier is a young, vibrant city with a centuries-old history of intellectual advances and social tolerance. It is the ideal place for an introduction to French language and culture.

Eligibility

Getting around Montpellier

The program is open to Purdue students of any major who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program.

  • Language and Culture Option, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, taken at least two semesters of college-level French and earned a 'B' average in French. 
  • Integrated Studies Option, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, taken at least four semesters of college-level French and earned a 'B' average in French.

Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

GPA Requirement: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Language Requirement: 2 Sem French

Students interested in completing courses while abroad from Purdue colleges or departments that are not listed above should discuss this with their study abroad advisor before applying to the program.


Academic Program

Participants will take 5 courses (15–18 credits) per semester. Please see program website for more information on courses.

The Language & Culture Program focuses on French language, humanities and the liberal arts with electives available in many fields of study. There are different tracks available and students should select their track level on the website to see detailed course offerings according to their level of French.

  • Intermediate Track (2 - 3 semesters of college-level French) Fall, Spring, Academic Year
  • Advanced Track (4+ semesters of college-level French ) Fall, Spring, Academic Year

Excursions

Two or three day-long excursions are planned each semester to introduce you to the unique character of southern France. These day excursions are included in your program fees. In addition, the program’s social assistants organize activities in Montpellier to help you get to know the city and to provide you with opportunities to meet French students. Optional longer excursions are also organized by the Program Center staff during the semester and are offered (at an extra cost) if there is sufficient interest.

Housing

Participants can choose from the following four housing options.  Each option has a different cost; for the exact amounts for each option see the program website.

  • apartment
  • homestay, including two meals per day
  • observatoire

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. 

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

The Program Fee Includes: tuition, insurance, three excursions, and housing in a dormitory. Students interested in other housing options should visit the UMN website to see the additional housing fees.
