Overview
Tokyo, with a population well over 10 million, is the political and financial capital of today's Japan. Tokyo is a modern city of wonderful contrasts. Its dignified temples and shrines quietly stand in the shadows of massive skyscrapers. Tokyo's fast pace is subdued by the serene charm of its many parks and the quiet courtesy of its people. Both energetic and graceful, Tokyo is a gateway to the fascinating culture of Japan.
The IES program is located in Makuhari, a modern city in Chiba prefecture - an easy 30 minutes from downtown Tokyo. Students will have easy access to public transportation and amenities such as shopping centers, restaurants and entertainment.
The spring semester typically begins the end of March and runs until mid-July.
The fall semester typically begins the end of August and runs until mid-December.

Eligibility
The program is open to Purdue students who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity and a desire to experience another culture.
Prior Japanese language knowledge is not required for the program but is strongly recommended. Beginning Japanese students should have a basic working knowledge of hiragana and katakana alphabets before the program begins.
Students may not participate on this program as their last term before graduation or after graduation and must be returning to Purdue the semester following the program to participate.

Students interested in completing courses while abroad from Purdue colleges or departments that are not listed above should discuss this with their study abroad advisor before applying to the program.
Academic Program
IES offers unique courses that explore Japanese language, history, and culture through an in-depth and hands-on approach. World-class professors and course options enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.
You must take 15-18 credits per semester.
Students will take a 6-credit language course at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) that is specifically designed for IES students. In addition, you'll also take English-taught area studies courses focusing on popular culture, economics, history, political science, and contemporary society. KUIS is a modern and vibrant university with an international faculty and state-of-the-art facilities. Some courses are offered on the KUIS campus, and others at the IES Abroad Center, which is a short walk from KUIS.

Housing
This program has several housing options including residence halls, homestays or apartments. Each option will require a commute to school of around 40-90 minutes, which is a common commute for the Tokyo area. Some options include a meal plan, while others do not. IES will help students pick the best housing option for their preferences.
Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
The IES program fees include: tuition, on-site orientation, field trips, and support from IES staff. The housing fee includes apartment housing (no meals provided). Additional fees apply for other housing options, please see IES website for more details.
