Program Description

This 2024 class continues and builds on successful Study Abroad classes offered in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023.  Constructing and operating well-integrated multi-modal systems is an engineering challenge that is difficult to comprehend only from a textbook. This course provides an opportunity to see the construction and operational activities involved in integrating the region’s airports, trains, subway, pedestrian, and bicycle infrastructure.  Supply chain logistics will be addressed during site visits to major automotive and aircraft assembly plants.

The class will begin in London with visits to Tower Bridge, London City Airport, Crossrail Stations, and several cultural sites. Students will travel to German sites in Munich, Berlin, Wolfsburg, and Potsdam for visits to VW and BMW  assembly lines, Munich airport airside operations, and several cultural sites. Students will also visit Salzburg, Austria for a salt mine tour. The course provides active learning experiences to introduce students to various types of European transportation infrastructure and systems.   Experience with public transportation systems, bike orientation tours, and cultural experiences will be highlighted in each city.

This course will be advertised broadly to recruit students from Civil Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Construction Engineering.  Past experience in this Study Abroad course has found that a substantial amount of peer-to-peer education occurs between related disciplines.
