Academic Program

This program is for a full academic year (early October to early August) or the spring semester (March - August).

The goal of this program is to offer foreign students the opportunity to take basic engineering courses in a Japanese university, without having to attain the Japanese language proficiency that would be necessary to take the same courses in Japanese. All lectures are given in English. Each student is assigned to a research group where s/he will participate in research activities of the group.

This program also offers courses on the Japanese language, culture, and society aimed at promotion of understanding of the Japanese language and social customs. Cultural and intellectual exchange with the Japanese students is an integral part of the program. This will be accomplished through class work as well as participation in the activities of research groups to which the students are assigned.

An example semester course schedule:
Japanese 1
Japanese Culture 1
Sci, Tech and Ind A
Applied Math
Mechanics of Materials A
Individual Research Training

Participants will be housed in the Tohoku University International House.
