Overview

Before applying, students interested in this program should discuss their plans with a Study Abroad Liaison in the College of Engineering.

Students spend 12 weeks at Ruhr University of Bochum working on a research project.  Due to the supervision involved, placements are limited.

Ruhr University Bochum was established in 1965 and has grown to become one of the largest universities in Germany with a student population of around 35,000.  The university is well known for the numerous contacts its schools of Science and Engineering entertain with industry through important research in many different fields.  Bochum has a population of some 500,000 and is situated in the Ruhr River valley, the economic nerve center of Germany.

Academic Program

No knowledge of German is required; the working language of the program is English.

Typically participants will earn a total of 6 credits.  Each student confirms the credit they will receive with the study abroad liaison in their home school or department.

Housing

RUB will assist summer research program participants in applying for local student housing.  The estimated cost for housing is €280 – 400 per month.  Meals can be prepared in the residence kitchens or taken at the student Mensa.  Meals at the Mensa are subsidized by the German government and are very affordable.

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

Students in Germany pay social fees as a prerequisite for enrollment. Social fees are not tuition fees but a contribution to the different facilities you will be using as a student, such as the library, student union, and athletic center. At RUB, these fees cost about €340 per term and include a semester ticket for regional public transportation. Since summer research students do not study in Bochum for the full German semester, they may be able to apply for a partial refund of the social fee.

The visa fee listed below is only necessary for Purdue international students who are citizens of countries required to get entry visas for Germany.  Your study abroad advisor can provide more information about this.
