Academic Program

The school year follows the typical British pattern of three ten-week terms separated by four-week vacation periods.  Most courses are taught continuously across two or three terms with a final exam or paper due at the end of the course.  Purdue students can apply to spend the full academic year (October to June) or the spring + summer terms (January to June, equal to the Purdue spring semester) at Essex.

Students may choose from the full range of courses offered, but should be sure that they meet the prerequisites for each course. Since British students tend to "major" in a discipline in their last years of high school they typically earn a bachelors degree in only three years. For this reason, a British second-year course would be considerably more advanced than a 200-level course at Purdue.

Module directory:  Be aware that the word course refers to a plan of study.  A class or course is called a module at the University of Essex.

Housing

Students are housed in single rooms in university residence halls, which will contribute significantly to the British experience. Rooms normally have their own washbasin with bathrooms down the hall. All students have access to a shared kitchen, and laundry and computing facilities are available on campus. Students either prepare their own meals in the kitchens or eat at a campus dining hall, cafe, or local restaurant. Housing is arranged for students prior to departure, provided they complete and return the accommodation forms as soon as they are received.

Estimated Program Costs
