Program Description

This Study-Abroad program offers Purdue Polytechnic Statewide undergraduate students the opportunity to experience first-hand advanced manufacturing education in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) which is a collaboration between Coventry University and Unipart Manufacturing Group in England. The students will tour AME’s 1700 sq. ft. manufacturing hub, a $5 million state-of-the-art robotic automation, forming, joining, analysis and simulation, metrology and product verification technology facilities.  The students will conduct three industrial assessments of advanced manufacturing plants located in the Midlands of England to identify energy-efficiency and cost-saving opportunities. In addition, the students will tour Microcab and see their H2EV car powered by a state-of-the-art 3kW fuel cell which gives the car a 100 mile range.  They will conduct a “Design Thinking” project for Microcab after meeting John Jostins, professor of sustainable transport design at Coventry University and manager of Microcab.  John Jostins is no stranger to innovation – he is one of the men responsible for the creation of R2D2 for the Star Wars movies. During one weekend, the students will tour nearby Warwich Castle and Stradford-on-Avon.  To provide intercultural experience, the students will start their trip with a weekend layover in Dublin, then experience a 2-hour fast ferry ride across the Irish Sea to England. Next they will experience a 4-hour English train trip from Holyhead to Coventry, England.
