This course will provide opportunities for students to gain a new perspective on national and international public health issues and policies and to gain a deeper understanding of the Irish culture. The term international public health recognises that, as a result of globalisation, forces that affect public health can and do come from outside national boundaries and that responding to public health issues now requires attention to cross-border health risks, including access to dangerous products and environmental change. Specific public health topics will be determined by current issues in public health. For example, public health topics covered may include electronic cigarettes, tobacco control and public health, infectious diseases – prevention and management (Ebola), obesity and weight management. Additionally, students will be given an introduction to the national heritage and culture of Ireland, including the natural, man-made and human heritage and culture. The module will also develop an awareness and evaluate contemporary culture using a number of case studies.
