Program Description
Fundamentals of Speech and Brazilian Culture in Rio is an innovative new study abroad opportunity offering 6 CREDITS in just over two weeks in the amazing city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This study abroad course is unique in that it combines a 3-credit core requirement (COM 11400, Fundamentals of Speech Communication) with a survival Portuguese and Brazilian culture course to maximize credits during this short timeframe. Unlike many other study abroad courses that have many prereqs or are restricted to specific majors only, this new program is aimed at freshman and sophomores, and students in every Purdue college are eligible! Our goal is to introduce you to international education early so that those of you who “catch the travel bug” have the time and flexibility to pursue future study abroad opportunities before degree completion. In addition, the course is the perfect segway to the Spring 2018 intensive Portuguese 105 Course (not required) and is especially recommended for engineering students who may be interested in participating in a new GEARE program that is in development in Brazil. Students should be prepared to work hard while immersing themselves in the rich culture of Rio! Note: departure from US on December 18 (arrival in Rio on December 19), with departure from Rio on January 4 and arrival in US on January 5.
