Program Description

This course is designed to facilitate a global health perspective as students continue to prepare for public health and medical practice in diverse communities with growing health disparities. The Dominican Republic public health and medical care systems will be explored through social, environmental, political, spiritual, and cultural influences. Academic, professional, and personal growth will be enabled through immersive experiences, networking opportunities, and self-exploration through journaling, discussing, and synthesizing our daily activities and experiences.

Academic Credit

CSR 390/590 - Independent Study in Public Health (3 credits instructed by Dr. Andrea DeMaria)


This program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at Purdue University. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, independence, and the desire to experience a way of life that differs from their own.

Minimum GPA Requirement: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

Preferred GPA Requirement: 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Language Requirement: none

Program Cost

Program cost is [tentatively] $3,500.00. This fee includes flight and other transportation (including to and from West Lafayette and departing airport), lodging, activities, and meals

Students may be eligible for the MOVES Scholarship!

All accepted students must pay a $500 deposit by October 15, 2017 to reserve a spot in the program.

Application Deadline

Applications are due by October 1, 2017. Students will be accepted on a rolling basis, so there is a chance the program will close prior to the application deadline
