Program Description

Deaf Can! Coffee is a social enterprise in Jamaica operated by Deaf baristas.  In order to bridge the communication between non-signing customers and the Deaf staff, an app was developed (by EPICS students on the DKC team) to help customers place orders and learn sign language through the process. Students from EPICS Purdue will visit Deaf Can! Coffee to implement the system as well as learn about Deaf culture and Jamaican culture.

During the one week visit (Dec 30-Jan 6), EPICS will travel around Jamaica to see different sights, learn more and experience the beauty of the people.

Draft itinerary:

December 30, 2017: Arrive in Jamaica at Norman Manley International Airport (KIN), travel to the school and get settled in the dormitories

December 31, 2017: Travel to Top Hill, St Elizabeth to meet the Deaf community and Clarke the farmer who inspired the movement behind Deaf Can! Coffee
