Program Description

Explore the artistic and cultural history of Cartagena, Colombia, a city uniquely shaped by Caribbean, South American, and European influences.

Over a period six days, experience educational and cultural activities related to five themes: food and leisure, art and design, music and dance, history and culture, and nature and the environment.

Each day will begin at the San Augustin campus of the Universidad de Cartagena, where students will have instruction in both "Survival Spanish" language skills and selected topics appropriate to the theme of the day. Purdue students will be partnered with Uni Cartagena students for portions of their visit, both in and out of the classroom.

Afternoons are devoted to theme-related activities: cooking classes, art and architecture tours, dance classes, visits to historic sites and a special eco tour to the new National Aviary. Evenings are free time to explore, but also include assigned activities related to the various themes.

The experience will be attractive to students who are interested in and passionate about the arts, history and cultural studies. The six days include immersive events where students have the opportunity for active learning.

Required pre-departure meeting on Saturday, March 10. Flight to Colombia is Sunday, March 11. Return to Purdue is Saturday, March 17.
