Program Description

Introduce computer based methods of structural analysis.  Learn proper assessment of computer generated analysis.  Gain experience performing a "large" scale structure analysis.  Correlate book based knowledge with local industrial and cultural developments that finite element method as affected.  Get exposed to lab culture and university culture of Australia. 

Visit local architectural constructions that have benefitted from finite element analyses such as Sydney Opera House etc.  Interactions with local students at University of New South Wales.  Interactions with local industry.  Cultural interactions that revolve around use of engineering analyses for advancing industry and civilization.  Understanding practical implication of finite element analyses. 


Proposed Itinerary:

Day 1 - Arrive/Guided walking tour and welcome dinner

Day 2 - Sydney Harbour National Park, Quarantine Station, Watsons Bay, and Harbour Ferry

Day 3 - Morning Class/Free time or Lecture/Industry Visit

Day 4 - Morning Class/Barangaroo Aboriginal Tour and Evening Vivid Light Festival

Day 5 - Morning Class/Industry Visit

Day 6 - Morning Class/Guided Opera House Tour

Day 7 - Morning Class/OPTIONAL Powerhouse Museum or Free time

Day 8 - Blue Mountains and Skyway, Cableway Ride and Scenic Rail, Three Sisters and Wentworth Falls

Day 9 - Free choice day

Day 10 - Morning Class/Industry Visit

Day 11 - Morning Class/ABC Studio Ultimo Tour

Day 12 - Morning Class/OPTIONAL Sydney Bridge Climb or Free time

Academic Credit

Earn 3 credits for AAE 490 - Finite Element Method for Engineering Structures.  For AAE students only, course can count as Structures Elective or Technical Elective. It will not count as design elective. Students in other engineering schools must contact your academic advisor to see how this will be counted in your plan of study.  




Open to engineering students in AAE, ME, and CE.  Necessary Background:  Matrix algebra, structural analysis, MATLAB and computer usage.  Contact Prof. Vikas Tomar if you are unsure if you qualify.  


Program Cost

Program costs approximately $3250 which includes all housing, ground transportation, airport pick up in Sydney, daily breakfast, 5 dinners, 3 lunches, all excursions on the itinerary, onsite staff support, 3 credits, and international health insurance.  Students who have the Purdue Moves Scholarship available will receive a $1000 scholarship lowering the cost to $2250.  

Additional expenses are airfare, Passport and travel documents, some meals, and personal activities and spending money.  

Application Deadline

Students will be accepted on a rolling basis until program reaches capacity. 20 spots are available.
