Program Description

Students will conduct research and experiments at the Universidad National de San Antonio Abad del Cuscu,  and in Arequipa, the desert region & border regions of Peru with Prof. Luciano Castillo and Prof. David Warsinger. This course brings fundamentals of engineering along with design, build & test of a wind turbine (integrating solar, wind & battery on portable renewble energy systems) to create a unique learning experience.  

Key activities: 

  • Test of micro-grid-water system
  • Cyber-physical system: Hydraulic wind turbine & CVT for Reverse Osmosis System
  • Scaled-down of wind turbine experiments in the wind tunnel subject to complet topography of Cuscu and Machu Pichu. 
  • Site visits: Machu Pichu, Sacred Valley, Amazon (Puerto Maldonado-Border),  Rainbow Mountain, and Lake Titicaca. 
  • Field Experiments at San Camilo & Tia Maria 
  • Visit the border of Peru & Chile and the border of Peru & Bolivia



Academic Credit

Students will earn 3 credits for ME 497.  This will be a Technical Elective for ME students.  All others must check with their academic advisors to see how this course will work in their plan of study.  


Engineering students who have reached sophomore status through seniors in any engineering discipline.  Students must be in good standing withe the university.  

Program Cost

Estimated cost is $2959 (without flight) which includes all housing, all ground transportation in Peru, several meals, entry fees to all excursions on the itinerary, 3 academic credits, and international health insurance.  

Additional expenses:  Airfare (est $1200), meals, passport, Visa (for non-US citizens), and personal spending money
