Program Description

Progress in micro- and nano-scale science and technology has created a demand for new microsystems for high-impact applications in healthcare, biotechnology, manufacturing, and mobile sensor networks.  The new robotics field of microrobotics has emerged to extend our interactions and explorations to sub-millimeter scales.  In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of mobile microrobot design, analysis, fabrication, and control, utilitizing case studies of existing approaches.  

Students in this course will travel to: 

Stuttgart, Germany

Zurich,  Lausanne, and Geneva, Switzerland 

Paris and Besancon, France

 

Proposed Itinerary

May 16- Depart USA

May 17- Arrive in Stuttgart, Germany, airport pick up provided, check in hotel, Welcome Dinner 

May 18-Visit to University of Stuttgart

May 19- Private motor coach transfer to Zurich, Chocolate making activity, free evening in Zurich 

May 20-Visit to ETH Zurich- One of the World's leading university in Science and Technology and cutting edge research, free evening in Zurich

 May 21- Private motor coach to Lausanne, Switzerland, guided tour of Chillon Castle, free evening around Lake Geneva 

 May 22- Visit EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, free evening 

May 23- 9:00am Guided Tour of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, rest of the day is free to explore 

May 24-Free day- Visit Interlaken, Montreux, or other close by cities                 

May 25-Private Coach transfer to Besançcon, France , Wine tasting in the countryside

May 26-Visit FEMTO-ST Institute-Electronics, Mechanics, Thermal Science and Optics, free evening  

May 27-Private coach to Paris, France, accommodations in city center, 2-hour guided walking tour of Paris, Metro Pass included, free evening for exploring Paris 

May 28-Visit UPMC University Pierre and Marie Curie/Sorbonne

            Guided tour of the Marie Curie Museum         

May 29-Eiffel Tower tickets included, Farewell dinner on Seine River cruise, free time in Paris

Academic Credit

EARN 3 credits for ME 497.  This is a Technical Elective for Mechanical Engineering.  Students from other Engineering schools must check with their academic advisor to see how this course can be used in their plan of study.  

Eligibility

Students in Engineering who have completed their sophomore year to Senior are eligible to apply.  Must be in good standing.  No academic probation.  All acceptance decisions will be made by Prof. Cappelleri. 

Program Cost

Program price is estimated to be $3950 which includes:  All Housing, Train tickets and other ground transportation, airport pick-up upon arrival, three academic credits, cultural excursions on the itinerary, all technical site visits, Welcome and Farewell meals,  and International Health Insurance.

Additional costs:  Airfare, meals, passport, Visa (if non-US citizen), personal spending money.
