Program Description

Must be a Purdue Promise student that has been approved to enroll in this program.

Students will spend three weeks in Scotland, completing one three-credit course entitled Global Leadership in Glasgow.

Program will be based in Glasgow, Scotland with excursions to Edinburgh, Isle of Skye, and Stirling.

Housing: Program participants will live with local residents of Glasgow, in shared or single rooms. Families will provide students with three meals per day and laundry service one per week. Hotel accommodations with shared rooms will be provided during excursions.


Academic Credit

Students will complete one three-credit course entitled Global Leadership in Valencia.

The course credit will be for EDPS 490.

Course Description

This course will focus on global leaderhsip and intercultural competence while immersed in the country of Spain. The Purdue Promise instructors and in-country guest lecturers will help you develop your understanding of your identity and role in a global context, as well as leadership strategies and cross-cultural skills to incorporate your expeirences in personal, professional, and academic development. As you explore Spain together, you will be exposed to a breadth of diverse cultural experiences in which you will be challenged to reflect on your emotional response and active participation within Spanish culture and integrate these into your personal and professional world view.

Course Objectives

  1. To provide a framework for the concept of global leadership.
  2. To enhance understanding of cross-cultural competencies as it relates to:
    1. A willingness to engage in a new culture
    2. Cognitive flexibility and emotional regulation
    3. Ethnocultural empathy and tolerance of uncertainty
    4. Intercultural development
    5. Self-efficacy
  3. To provide an opportunity to reframe personal definitions of global leadership through multiple lenses by investigating leadership across various cultures.
  4. To learn to incorporate a study abroad experience into post-trip academic, professional, and social endeavors, through a discussion of cross-cultural experiences.
  5. To provide opportunities to debrief and reflect on the impact of cultural immersion.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, you must meet the following criteria.

  • You must be a Purdue Promise student.
  • You must be in good academic standing.
  • You must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • You must attend an information session.
  • You must submit an application to Purdue Promise staff co-leaders.
  • You must be selected for and complete an interview with Purdue Promise staff co-leaders.
  • You must be selected for the trip by Purdue Promise staff co-leaders.
  • You must submit a participation agreement.
  • You must not have used the short-term Purdue Moves scholarship.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Students submit a $200 deposit as part of the application that goes toward the cost of the trip.
