Studio Art College International (SACI)

Program: Studio Arts College International (SACI) was founded to meet a growing student demand for excellence in studio art instruction and international liberal arts education. SACI's Italian location is in Florence, allowing students access to the city's rich historical, artistic, and cultural resources.

Location: Combining the world's great artistic treasures with a surrounding countryside of remarkable beauty, Florence is the ideal place to pursue artistic studies. Florence is the world's most celebrated city of Renaissance art and architecture. SACI's home, the "Palazzo dei Cartelloni," is a 29,000 square foot air-conditioned palazzo that boasts a beautiful gallery/exhibition space, classrooms, a library, offices, an art conservation laboratory, media facilities and studios surrounding a large, traditional Italian garden.

Summer applicants can choose between SACI's Summer I term, which starts in May, or the Summer II term, which starts in June.

Academic Program

Art Department classes normally meet with instructors for 90 hours per term (including field trips). For each studio course, students are expected to fulfill a minimum of 45 hours of additional studio time per term beyond the class hours. Students who wish to pre-register for courses at the Intermediate or Advanced level must include with their applications slides, photos, CDs, or videos of work already undertaken in these areas of study. Academic Studies Department classes normally meet with instructors for 45 hours per term. In all classes, students have assignments beyond regular class hours.

Attendance is mandatory for all classes. All classes, with the exception of Italian language classes, are taught in English.

Courses: Click here for more information on courses.

Field trips to Pisa, Arezzo, Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, and Fiesole are a regular part of the program and are open to all summer students. Art History course field trips visit all the major museums of Florence (including the Uffizi, the Accademia, the Bargello, and the Pitti Palace) as well as masterpieces in the churches and monasteries in and around the city.

During the summer months, Florence also offers a remarkable range of cultural and popular events and activities. You can experience the famous Calcio in Costume, during which the different districts of the city compete in what is considered to be the ancestor of modern soccer. There are also regular outdoor evening film and music festivals, as well as the Estate Fiesolana, which includes concerts, film, and theater held in a Roman amphitheater in Fiesole.

Participants are housed in double rooms located in fully furnished and equipped apartments near SACI in the center of Florence.  All apartments meet strict health and safety standards and are covered by fire and third-party liability insurance.  A full-time staff is available to assist students; washing machines and bed linens are provided.
