Program Description
GLOBAL DESIGN AND PRACTICE FOR PRE-ENGINEERING IN TAIWAN AND JAPAN
June 15-30, 2024
Tokyo, Sendai, Taipei, Tainan
This course is specifically designed for incoming first-year engineering students and introduces new students to engineering design and practice in both Japan and Taiwan. You will develop intercultural competencies that will benefit you throughout your engineering career through reflections on a range of hands-on activities and interaction with the local communities.
In Taiwan, you will tour world-class semiconductor companies such as TSMC and visit Purdue's key partner universities in Taipei and Tainan (NCKU and NTNU) - renowned for semiconductor talent development and language education. Extending your experience, the course also invites you to visit Japan, where you can immerse yourself in its rich culture in Tokyo. A significant highlight includes a trip to Sendai to visit one of the top engineering universities, Tohoku University. This visit is not only about appreciating the university's academic excellence but also understanding the resilience and efforts of the local community to recover from the 2011 Fukushima disaster. You will witness firsthand the deep connection between engineering practices, the local community, and their context, offering a unique perspective on how engineering can contribute to societal rebuilding and improvement.

Academic Credit
Earn 3 credits for ENGR 19500
Eligibility
Open to incoming firstyear engineering students, newly admitted to the College of Engineering.
Participants must be 18 years or older when participating in the program on June 15th, 2024.
Notes:
- Paperwork is available for minors who are really motivated to participate in the program)

Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
The estimated cost is $4300
Program fees include Three academic credits, all housing, ground transportation in the country, breakfast daily, a few lunches and dinners, all activities and cultural events on the itinerary, and international health insurance.
Additional costs: Airfare, most lunches and dinners, passport, Visa (if necessary), and personal spending money and activities.
Application Deadline
A maximum of 20 students will be selected.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until program reaches capacity. Please email your application essay (no more than 500-word) to wei190@purdue.edu for review. The essay should address the following questions:
1) Why do you want to join this summer program?
2) What do you hope to accomplish after completing the program?
3) Please share any relevant personal experiences you'd like the program lead to be aware of (e.g. language background, travel history, personal interests in the region, etc.)
Financial Aid
Purdue University financial aid may be applied to the costs of studying abroad. Students interested in receiving financial aid should
complete and submit the FAFSA by the appropriate deadline.
NOTE: Recipients of certain tuition remission and scholarship programs should pay careful attention to the regulations for using those benefits for study abroad. Ask your financial aid advisor about any limitations.
