Program Description

EPICS is an experiential learning course focused in user-centered design within the context of community engagement.  Multidisciplinary teams of students are paired with community organizations to address needs and opportunities with an impact in local and global communities.  In the process, students develop professional skills needed to succeed in the job market.

In this short study abroad, students will partner with the 'Institute for the Development of Communities' and the 'Center for Hemispherical Cooperation in Research and Education' at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, which have been working with the community of Veguita Zamas in Jayuya to develop sustainable energy independency using renewable energy sources, such as solar.  Jayuya was one of the sectors that took several months to have power re-established after two category 5 hurricanes harmed the power infrastructure in 2017.
