Overview

IES-Tokyo

Study on the IES Abroad Tokyo Summer program and enjoy an ideal introduction to Japanese culture, while expanding your language skills.

As one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas, Tokyo and its environs will challenge you to look at the world differently. Mastering public transportation, trying exotic foods, encountering the maximum urban environment that surrounds carefully nurtured gardens and parks, experiencing a lifestyle that combines fast-paced modernity with age-old traditions – all of these will expand your view of the world and offer insights into your own reality. 

This program offers accelerate language learning with an intensive 6-credit Japanese course at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level. In addition, students:

  • Live in Japanese residence hall-style housing in the heart of Tokyo
  • Experience life with a Japanese family while exploring a nearby city on a homestay trip
  • Participate in field trips to historic and cultural sites, and traditional festivals
  • Enjoy Japanese cultural activities including Japanese flower arranging, calligraphy, Japanese koto (floor harp), and more

Eligibility

IES-Tokyo

Students may not participate on this program as their last term before graduation or after graduation and must be returning to Purdue the semester following the program to participate.

International students at Purdue: Please note if your nationality requires a visa to enter Japan that this program cannot provide the needed documentation to obtain a visa. Please check visa requirements for your nationality. 

 

GPA Requirement: 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
Language Requirement: 0-4 Sem

Students interested in completing courses while abroad from Purdue colleges or departments that are not listed above should discuss this with their study abroad advisor before applying to the program.


Academic Program

Students will enroll in one 6-credit Japanese course. Various levels of Japanese are offered and students take a placement exam to ensure they are placed in an appropriate level. Students who place into the 300-level or above can choose to also take a 1-credit course Learning Japanese Through Manga & Anime.

The program includes several field trips and cultural activities. Please see the IES website for more information.

Housing

Students will stay in a residence hall-style accommodation that provides small individual rooms and shared bathrooms. The housing has several on site cafes as well as a pool and a gym.

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
 
Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

Program fee includes tuition, two meals per day, on-site orientation, field trips, and commuting subsidies (if applicable).
