Overview

Buenos Aires offers the best of big-city living with fascinating social and economic dynamics. Enjoy world-class theater, music, film, sports, and museums, or simply people-watch while sipping coffee at a sidewalk cafe.

Take your studies in business, economics, psychology, neuroscience, or Spanish to Argentina’s multicultural capital. Choose your own combination of IFSA electives and Spanish language classes (all levels), plus choose a class at Universidad del Salvador or Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, where you can get to know Argentine students. The option for an internship also gives you an insider’s pass to Argentine work culture.

Participants take classes IFSA's study center and have the option to take to one class at a local Argentine university. This program has two options:

  1. Study in Buenos Aires Plus
  2. Study in Buenos Aires Plus: Psychology and Neuroscience Explore psychology, neuroscience, health, or human and family development with English-taught classes in Argentina, where there are more psychologists per capita than in any other country.

Program activities are designed to enhance intercultural competence by developing  understanding of the local culture and people. Activities are optional, but they are included in the total program fee. They vary each term based on availability, but activities may include:

  • City-as-Text: This guided walking tour will introduce students to Porteño society and culture through the varied artistic expressions that can be found throughout Buenos Aires including street art, dance, theater, and music.
  • La Boca Neighborhood Tour: The oldest site of Italian migration to Buenos Aires, the famous and colorful La Boca neighborhood is home to one of the city’s most popular soccer teams, Club Atlético Boca Juniors. The tour will include a visit to La Bombonera stadium to appreciate the importance of soccer as popular expression in Argentina.
  • Colón Theatre Performance: Attend a performance at Colón Theatre, one of the most important opera houses in the world, to learn about the influence and experience the importance of art in Argentina.
  • Pandemic and Politics: This event will engage you in a discussion about how the pandemic was handled and the effects it has had on Argentina. A guest lecturer will address specific issues around how the population lived through this worldwide event.
This program runs from late July to early December in the fall, and from late February to early July in the the spring.

GPA Requirement: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Language Requirement: none

Academic Program

Study in Buenos Aries Plus offerings are designed for students with zero to advanced Spanish language experience. Build your own curriculum from IFSA electives and language classes along with one direct-enroll class taught in English at Universidad del Salvador (USAL) or Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (UTDT) to meet your academic needs and goals for a total of 14-16 U.S. semester credit hours. A second USAL or UTDT class may be taken for a supplemental fee.

All IFSA elective classes are worth 3 U.S. semester credits and are open to all students without prerequisites. Classes may vary by semester based on faculty availability and student interest.

All students will take either a Spanish language course, or a 1-credit Essential Spanish seminar during the first weeks of the program.

This program also has an option to participate in a part-time, credit-bearing internship.

Please see the IFSA website for more details on classes.

Excursions

IFSA excursions are included in your total program fee and though these are optional, most students choose to participate. They vary each term based on availability, but excursions may include:
  • Tigre Delta del Parana Trip: This overnight excursion to the Tigre Delta includes a boat ride and offers a glimpse into the contrasts between wetlands and island living and the big-city life in Buenos Aires.
  • Eco-Village Trip: This day-long trip to an eco-village explores the traditional agricultural mode of production and delves into issues such as organic and self-sustainable farming, local consumption, and the dynamics of multinational farming and feedlot production.

Housing

Buenos Aires students can opt for a homestay with a local family or—for an additional fee—live in city apartments. Homestays provide opportunity for additional support and connection as you get to know your hosts.

If you are adventurous or independent, living in a shared apartment allows you to soak up local culture, practice Spanish language skills, and connect with porteños (city residents). Both options allow you to experience the lifestyle of this amazing city.

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
