Program Description

Spend a little time in Stockholm, and you’ll quickly see why Sweden and its Scandinavian neighbors are some of the happiest countries in the world.  Take a daily fika break to sip delicious coffee and enjoy scrumptious cinnamon buns, all while taking-in the region’s endless water views and near 24-hour daylight.

The program will include multiple excursions and experiences.  Embrace Swede’s love for the outdoors with a day-long hiking/foraging expedition.  Learn how to make compelling travel content by working with tourism officials in Uppsala (a vibrant university town north of Stockholm).  Stroll the 13th century streets of Gamla Stan (Stockholm’s old town) on a guided tour, and experience Sweden’s unique cuisine.  We will take time for multiple fika (coffee) breaks, and take a crash course in “Survival Swedish” (don’t worry – almost everyone speaks English). We will also take a guided tour of Sweden's Parliament (the Riksdag).

Stockholm and its well-connected airport (and ferry service) is a great launch-pad for other European travel during multiple open, three-day travel weekends.  Maybe take the high-speed train south to visit the birthplace of Ikea, or hop on an overnight cruise to Helsinki, Finland?  Your personal travel choices around Europe are endless.

The program has rolling acceptance and can only accept a maximum of 20 students (Deadline to apply is Feb. 15) – so be sure to get your $500 deposit in early to secure your spot!

  • COM 478 (Health Communication Campaigns):  We will be chatting with local healthcare professionals and Swedish cultural experts to learn what makes Sweden one of the happiest countries in the world.  The goal is to take what we’ve experienced in Sweden and develop a health campaign focused on mental wellbeing for the Purdue student population.
  • COM 49502 (Travel Writing): Work with local tourism officials and companies to create compelling travel content, and learn how people turn their passion for travel into thriving businesses.

Eligibility

The program is open to all majors.  There are no prerequisites for the two courses offered.

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

The total program cost is estimated to be about $4,200.  This is the cost that will be billed to you by Purdue, and it already includes the study abroad program fee of $304.70, as well as the excursions described above, housing in Stockholm, and an unlimited Stockholm-region metro card that provides travel on trains, buses, and ferries in the Stockholm region.

Not included in this cost is airfare, and most food/meals during your time in Stockholm.  All housing/apartment accommodations will have kitchens for you to be able to cook your own meals.
